Atomium Culture AISBL is an international non-profit organisation of European universities, newspapers and businesses for the dissemination and knowledge transfer of European research,.[1][2] The organisation was launched publicly in 2009 at the European Parliament in Brussels[3] by the former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Michelangelo Baracchi Bonvicini, now Honorary President and President respectively of Atomium Culture.[4]

Mission

The mission of Atomium Culture is to encourage the development of a knowledge society in Europe by increasing the cooperation and dialogue between the institutions engaged, to increase public interest in science and to create an environment to prevent a brain drain from Europe.[3]

History

In 2006 the Permanent Platform of Atomium Culture was formally founded under the Law of Belgium as an International Non-Profit Organisation (Association International Sans But Lucratif).

From 2006 to 2009 Atomium Culture developed its start-up engaging universities, newspapers, and research-oriented businesses in Europe.[5] In November 2009 the Permanent Platform of Atomium Culture was launched publicly,[6] to coordinate activities with the institutions engaged for the dissemination and knowledge transfer of research.

On 9 November 2009 Giscard d’Estaing and Baracchi Bonvicini signed the European Manifesto of Atomium Culture.[7][2][8]

On May 18, 2010, Giscard d’Estaing and Baracchi Bonvicini presented the Report on European Research and Innovation 2020 together with the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek [9] and the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

Structure

The Advisory Board [10] is composed of representatives from each sector engaged in the permanent platform.

The Scientific Committee [11] is composed of professors from the universities engaged in the platform.

The Editorial Committee [12] is composed of Chief Science Editors from five of the newspapers engaged.

The Executive Board [13] is the main decision making body, setting the goals and making the necessary decisions, taking into account the advice of the Advisory Board.

The Management Team [14] is responsible for the management of the daily activities, of maintaining the relations with the actors engaged in the permanent platform and the coordination of the joint activities.

The Editing Office [15] is responsible for facilitating the communication of the innovative research selected.

The Presidency [16] ensures the moral and ethical continuity of the project. It addresses its advice to the Executive Board. The Presidency is composed of the Honorary President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing and the President Michelangelo Baracchi Bonvicini.
